Developing powerful and relevant insights partnership with NUS Formula SAE Team

The NUS Formula SAE (FSAE) team is a group of undergraduate students from the National University of Singapore who design, build, and race a formula-style race car. The team has been participating in the annual Formula SAE competition since 2001 and has won numerous awards over the years. In 2018, the team ranked 13th worldwide out of 120 teams at the annual Formula SAE International Challenge held in Michigan, USA. The team also won several awards in various categories such as Brake Design, Race Car Engineering Drawing, Acceleration Event, Engineering Design, and Marketing Presentation. Recently, the team visited BorgWarner Singapore to gain a better understanding of HV Lab Fundamentals and Safety. The visit was aimed at providing the team with experience in the field of high voltage safety and mechanical design considerations, including enclosure design and thermal aspects.

During the visit, the team of twelve was introduced to the fundamentals of high voltage safety by Ted Chua (Manager, Systems Engineering). The team was also given an overview of the HV safety equipment, and the Electrical Designers, Jing De Wong and Keith Chan gave a demonstration of the Motor and the Inverter subsystems. The team members were able to gain valuable insights into the design and testing of high voltage systems, as well as the importance of safety protocols. Florence Ng (Manager, Mechanical Engineering) presented on the enclosure design and thermal aspects, which are critical considerations when designing high voltage systems. Overall, the visit was a great success and provided the team with valuable knowledge and experience that will help them in their future endeavors.
